The Friesian horse is known for its impressive looks, amazing movements and above all for their extremely willing and lovable dispositions. They are great dressage horses, driving horses and show horses. Anywhere they go, they steal the show! Friesian horses reach top levels in the driving sport and more and more Friesians can be seen in the highest levels of dressage.
At present less than 3000 of these gorgeous creatures exist in North America. Of this small population, no more than 18 are approved breeding stallions by the FPS. (FPS= Friesian horse Studbook)
Characteristics of a Friesian horse: The Friesian stands 15 1/2 to 17 hands high, mares usually a bit smaller than stallions and geldings. Black is their only color. The head is noble with a strong beautiful neck that is naturally bent and shapely. The legs are muscled with a well-developed forearm. The back is strong, the shoulder long, sloping and powerful. In motion, the Friesian is fluid and flashy with highly suspended gaits, emphasized by the feathering on the lower legs and the full wavy mane. It is pure magic to watch their movements, or better to ride one!
Friesians, aside from their sheer physical impressiveness are especially treasured for their friendly characters. They are extremely willing, intelligent horses of cheerful temperament. They enable an inexperienced rider to handle them with ease.
They require a soft touch and a sensitive training structure (any horse does), because of their sensitive characters. They are extremely fast learners. Experienced horseman reach top levels in all aspects of both the riding and driving sport with them. |
